The most asked question in most emails phone calls that our agency receives daily is, "How much does a Web site cost?" The answer:
"How much does it cost to build a house?"
You see, it is impossible to give a quick answer to either of those questions without more details. Costs of Web sites and marketing efforts are not only based on pages or number of ads, but also on functionality. Simple, informative sites that offer your users basic information about your company and the services/products you supply are a lot less expensive that sites that have e-commerce. Database driven sites, when done correctly, can be substantial in cost. Costs for Web site development are also based on many other things such as:
Quality of programming
- if you want a Web site in a box, you will not spend a lot
of money up front. You will also more than likely never make money from your site either.
Platform
- UNIX or Windows NT choices can vary greatly in cost.
Optimization of the site
- programming geared towards the ever-changing algorithms of the search engine spiders is essential, and not always done by the typical programmer.
Graphics
- high quality graphics that load quickly can cost more and are essential to a site that attracts users.
Personalization
- some personalization technologies can cost over $100K (think Amazon.com and American Airlines)
Database Integration
- Complex database driven sites created by industry leaders can cost over $100K easily.
E-commerce
- the merchant account alone can take up a large piece of your budget, not to mention continued maintenance.
Cross-platform testing
- some of the top Web site developers still overlook the importance of testing on various platforms and modem
speeds.
There are many, many more factors that are involved in pricing of a Web site. The most important thing to remember is that your Web site is an investment. Much like the costs involved to start your brick-and-mortar venture, a great site will ensue a high cost up front, but if done correctly, can make your money back in a few weeks in some cases. Beware of really low priced developers, as you do indeed get what you pay for, especially in technology.
